Mad Men is so smart and fun to watch. Love the not-so subtle social critique, the complex characters, the well-written story, and the perspective on the 1960s. And I love love the visually arresting details, by which I mean the furniture, the clothes, the hair, the accessories, the style.
Madison Avenue may have been overrun with racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, philandering, alcoholic advertising men and their secretaries/playthings, but at least they all knew how to dress!
I wouldn't want to squeeze myself into Joan's sleek, fitted, brightly colored sheaths and super high heels but how incredible does she look? I love her done hair, brooches, and simple silhouettes. Why does everyone seem to look to skinny minnies like Angelina Jolie for womanly beauty?
While the women look great, the looks are not something I'd want to adopt myself. (Conical bras and hoop skirts? Please.) However, I am a fan of the classic, ultra-stylish looks on the men. Skinny lapels, narrow ties, crisp dress shirts (Don Draper shows the perfect amount of cuff), always cuff links and pocket squares and tie tacks, hats (did you know JFK was the first President to not wear a hat?), and perfectly tailored pants - the cuffs hit in exactly the right place.
The show doesn't idealize the 1960s and neither will I. I'm glad I didn't live in the world portrayed in Mad Men - but I do love watching it.
