Inspired: dot painted china

In My Antonia (one of my favorite, favorite books by the way) by Willa Cather, one of the characters hand paints china. If I recall correctly, she paints her husband's shaving mug with violets and lilies.

I don't think Mark would like it if I painted violets or lilies on the white bowl he uses to make shaving foam. But I do like the idea of painting leaves or florals on our white porcelain plates. But is it too girlie or precious? Will I tire of it? Am I willing to risk our plates potentially look like a 5 year old's art project? Hmm, decisions to be made.

I do like the blue on white though. Maybe I'll just start with dessert plates. I also like the idea of displaying hand-painted china on the wall, especially if they turned out this cute.

In Harumi's Japanese Cooking by Harumi Kurihara, she has a nice paragraph on how your cooking style evolves over time, and so should the dishes you use to present the food. There is a picture of her dishes and they are all so pretty! I think you should do it - it would be a nice hobby and then your set will have nice meaning, and will look quite pretty. (shaving bowl included :)
